Louisa M. Alcott; Daniel Defoe; Max Pemberton; John Buchan; Frances Jenkins Olcott
Assorted Works of Children&Apos;S Literature
London, Associated Newspaper, Ltd. c1932. Cloth. An unusually bright collection of four important pieces of children's literature, illustrated in colour and in splendid decorative bindings. 'Little Women' was written by Louisa May Alcott (1832-1888) and follows the four March sisters as they navigate adolescence; scholars often describe it as being semi-autobiographical, inspired by the author's time in her family home with three sisters. Alcott later wrote two sequels, 'Little Men' and 'Jo's Boys&apos.'Robinson Crusoe' was written by Daniel Defoe (c1660-1731), an English writer who produced over three hundred works in his lifetime. 'Robinson Crusoe' has a legacy unlike any other, having forged a genre of its own and inspiring copycat books starring castaways on desert islands, such as 'Swiss Family Robinson', 'Lord of the Flies' and Jules Verne's 'Mysterious Island&apos. 'The Arabian Nights' Entertainment' is a collection written in Arabic during the Islamic Golden Age. It was collected over hundreds of years by authors, translators and scholars across Asia and North Africa. Famed tales within include 'The Seven Voyages of Sinbad the Sailor', 'Aladdin's Wonderful Lamp' and 'Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves&apos.'The Magic Walking Stick' was written by John Buchan and is a children's work telling the tale of Bill and his magic walking-stick which can transport him anywhere.Sir Max Pemberton's 'The Iron Pirate' was the author's best-known work, and saw enormous popularity in the 1890s. It is the tale of a high-seas adventure. The Iron Pirate contains a set of six lovely postcards relating to the work in an envelope pasted to the front pastedown. Each volume is illustrated with a frontispiece in full colour, as well as containing colour plates by various artists.Undated; dated from copies on Jisc.Published by Associated Newspapers, Ltd.Four beautiful examples of these important classic pieces of fiction, scarcely found in such a well-preserved set. In a full cloth binding. Externally lovely. Internally, firmly bound. Pages have the odd instance of spotting but are otherwise bright. Near Fine .
